MEZZOMONTE, ITALY: CHESTNUT FESTIVAL

Sunday, October 5th

During the month of October, the little hillside town of Mezzomonte has a chestnut festival or Sagra del Castagna.

This is a crazy chestnut poster. They were on the road leading to the festival.

I had to get a photo of crazy Nick in his "anniversary" sweater at the festival. He's so proud of it. :)

We met up with our Italian friends Flavia, Christian, and Flavia's mother, Jeanine. (great name) ;) They had been hiking with their dog from Gorgazzo and were just as hungry as we were!
They led us over to a backyard where 3 Italians were making food. Yes, the locals opened their backyards to anyone and everyone that came to the festival. That would never happen in the States.

The main item on the menu was warm chestnuts that smelled delicious. I had tried them in Venice previously, and wasn't fond of them. I decided to try them again, and loved them! They're so starchy!

We also ordered several meat platters. These were our favorite. Sausage and bread. Can't hardly go wrong with that combo.

It was a great way to spend a Sunday evening! I love fall in Italy and eating/visiting with friends.
